My Healing Companion: Best Quality Activity

When I began chemotherapy I looked in the mirror and thought, "No one is going to love this. I've lost my husband and my hair." I was damaged goods. I felt ugly, unloved and unlovable. I saw no beauty in my own reflection.

It was a difficult task and took a long time, but I made that reflection beautiful again. Every morning looking into the mirror I would say out loud positive qualities I felt I had. These qualities didn't flow off my tongue. I needed help from other survivors and friends to find the words that were comforting for me such as "I am loving, I am dependable, I am honest." I would finish by holding eye contact in the mirror and say "I love you. I am beautiful." These are tough words to recite when your self-esteem has hit rock bottom. But, after many mornings of this routine, I actually began to believe that I was beautiful and lovable. I no longer was asking why me? but why not me?

In the "Why Me?" section on page 17 of My Healing Companion I encourage the reader to move out of the victim stage and into the champion spirit. How do you let go of the why me? and live the spirit of why not me? I believe it starts with loving yourself. Have you forgotten your unique qualities - those special traits that make us the outstanding person are today?

Do you know your best qualities?
