Nausea and Vomiting  View PDF version (Adobe® PDF)

Chemotherapy and radiation therapy are common treatments for cancer. But side effects, such as nausea and vomiting (also called emesis), are often difficult for cancer patients to tolerate. It is very important to manage these side effects, since keeping food in your stomach provides nourishment and energy to help keep you strong and healthy during treatment. Plus, controlling nausea and vomiting may help you to do the things you enjoy most.

Nausea and vomiting that last a long time can cause dehydration and may lead to low blood pressure, muscle spasms and cramps. If you don’t get enough nutrients, you can lose muscle and weight and become tired, light-headed and confused. On rare occasions, the physical strain from vomiting can cause bleeding. Vomit also can be inhaled into the lungs, causing pneumonia. Therefore, it’s very important that nausea and vomiting that result from chemotherapy and radiation therapy be controlled.

Kytril is an effective anti-emesis treatment that may protect you for 24 hours from the nausea and vomiting that can sometimes occur following chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Preventing emesis is essential, and Kytril has been doing it for more than 8 years. Kytril blocks the body’s ability to send signals to the brain that trigger nausea and vomiting as a result of chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Just one dose offers 24-hour protection. And Kytril Injection is safe and effective even for children ages two years and older. Kytril is also safe and effective for the elderly and individuals with heart, liver or kidney concerns and can be taken orally as a tablet or solution, or through an injection prior to chemo-or radiation therapy. So talk to your doctor today about Kytril.

Are you at risk for emesis? Factors such as type of treatment, schedule of treatment and your age can all play a role in whether you are at risk for developing nausea and vomiting. Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy drugs are designed to attack fast-growing cells in the body. However, because the agents used during treatment must travel throughout the entire body, healthy cells are also affected, often leading to side effects, including nausea and vomiting.

Radiation Therapy
Radiation impairs the ability of cancer cells to multiply. Since cancer cells grow at rapid rates, radiation therapy attacks reproducing cancer cells, but it can also affect reproducing cells of normal tissues. The damage to normal cells is what causes side effects, including nausea and vomiting.

Post-Operative Nausea and Vomiting
The nausea and vomiting that can occur after surgery affects 20% to 30% of people depending on the type of procedure and anesthetic used. Not only is post-operative nausea and vomiting distressing, it can also lead to complications after surgery. Talk to your doctor about how Kytril can prevent post-operative nausea and vomiting.
